Frayne House

Frayne House is named after the extraordinary Ursula Frayne, a pioneer educator, welfare reformer, advocate, and policy maker. Her remarkable life and leadership inspire us to pursue justice and compassion in all that we do.

Ursula Frayne, a Sister of Mercy, arrived in Australia in 1846 and opened the first Mercy school with humble beginnings. Despite challenges, she persevered and eventually served 100 children, leaving a lasting impact.

Beyond education, Ursula established a boarding house, a convent, and dedicated herself to uplifting women and girls in need. Ursula's legacy continues as thousands of Australian youth benefit from Mercy-inspired educational programs. Frayne House to honours Ursula's commitment to justice, compassion, and empowering others.

Our Crest and Motto

The Frayne crest has 3 symbols: the Celtic Cross, the Black Swan and a flame.

The Cross lies front and centre symbolising that Jesus is at the centre of all we do. The style is a Celtic Cross, popularised in Ireland and is the perfect nod to Ursula Frayne's Irish heritage.

The Black Swan dominates the crest. Native to Western Australia, it represents a connection to our location and that of Sr Ursula, the first Mercy sister to arrive in Australia in 1846. She established the Sisters of Mercy in Perth, located on the Swan River.

The flame of faith forms the backdrop to our crest. It is symbolic of the Holy Spirit which burns within each one of us and was the instrumental force of good driving Sr Ursula. Its position on the crest reminds us that Jesus is always with us, guiding us in all that we do.

The Frayne House motto is Leadership, Faith and Friendship. It reminds us of the resounding qualities of this resourceful and tenacious pioneer of Catholic education in WA. She was willing to spearhead ventures and challenge the status quo. Her Faith is irrefutable when, as a young woman she dedicated herself to God and his good works, travelling across the world to be his hands and feet. She was a close friend and strong supporter of Catherine McAuley, showing this by pledging to provide for the Mercy sisters she worked with.

The House colour, orange, is often associated with optimism and enthusiasm.

Sr Ursula Frayne inspires us to be enthusiastic leaders in our own lives and communities, have faith in our God, and be a good friend.
