Hayes House
Hayes House is named in honour of Sister Placida Hayes, a pioneering figure in Catholic education in the South West.
Sister Placida Hayes, with her deep faith and trust in God, overcame numerous challenges to establish a strong foundation for Catholic education in Bunbury. Despite the slow progress, isolation, and lack of resources in the early colony, Sister Placida's determination allowed her vision to flourish and continue to this day. Her remarkable commitment to the school building project and the establishment of Mercy Education in Bunbury left a lasting impact. Hayes House embodies her unwavering spirit and enduring vision.
Our Crest and Motto
The Hayes Crest comprises three key features: a Wedge Tail Eagle, Cleopatra’s Needles, and the Mercy Cross.
Both the Wedge Tail Eagle and Cleopatra’s Needles are natural elements found in the south west of Western Australia, and they symbolise our College’s connection to the land.
The Wedge-Tail Eagle represents courage and strength. It reminds us of the inner strength we can draw upon during challenging times.
Cleopatra’s Needles symbolises love and beauty. It draws our attention to the love we have for family and friends and the appreciation we have for the natural beauty of our surroundings.
The Mercy Cross brings us back to our faith. The Cross reminds us of Sr Placida’s legacy of service by assisting with the foundation of the first Mercy Convent in the South West. Placida’s devotion to faith continues to inspire.
The colour purple embodies both harmony and royalty. Our house motto, Honesty, Hope and Humility reflects our values. Honesty fosters respect and integrity, hope fuels optimism for positive outcomes, and humility reminds us to recognise the worth and dignity of all.
